Abstract:   (73 Views)
The interbank market interest rate, as one of the most critical instruments of monetary policy, plays a significant role in guiding liquidity, managing interest rates, and controlling inflation. But in the Iranian economy, the effectiveness of this tool is challenged by structural constraints, such as banking network imbalances, fiscal dominance, interest rate ceilings (repressed interest rates), and the high sensitivity of inflation to exchange rate shocks. Given the importance of this issue, the present study employs a Vector Autoregression-Vector Error Correction Model (VAR-VECM) using quarterly data from 2011 to 2024 to investigate the relationship between the interbank interest rate and inflation, alongside variables such as the exchange rate, output, and liquidity. The results indicate that in the long run, the exchange rate, liquidity, output, and the interbank interest rate have a significant relationship with inflation; specifically, increases in the exchange rate and liquidity lead to higher inflation, while increases in output and the interbank interest rate are associated with lower inflation. The result of the Impulse Response Function also shows that the interbank interest rate shock has no significant effect on inflation in the first three quarters, while after a few quarters it causes a decrease in inflation, which indicates the lagged effect of the interbank interest rate. Furthermore, variance decomposition analysis confirms that in the long-term horizon, after inflation itself, the exchange rate accounts for the largest share of inflation fluctuations, followed by the interbank interest rate, output, and liquidity. These findings suggest that although the exchange rate plays a dominant role in explaining inflation volatility, the interbank interest rate—as a key monetary policy instrument—can effectively contribute to inflation control in the long run. Consequently, a combination of active interest rate management, exchange rate market stability, liquidity growth control, and macroeconomic policy coordination can assist in improving inflation control in the Iranian economy.
